Laparoscopic & robotic surgery

Minimally invasive and open gynecologic surgery, with the approach tailored to the condition and the patient.

Consultation before laparoscopic or robotic gynecologic surgery at Hadassah clinics in Jerusalem and Ramat Gan. The surgical approach is discussed in relation to your findings and medical history.

What is laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy uses small abdominal incisions, a camera and slender instruments to operate inside the abdomen and pelvis. It is performed in an operating theatre under general anaesthesia, with gas creating working space.

What is robotic surgery?

In robotic surgery, the surgeon controls instruments attached to robotic arms from a console. The system offers magnified three-dimensional vision and articulated instruments. The surgeon directs the movements; the robot does not operate independently.

How is the approach chosen?

These approaches may suit uterine, ovarian and selected cancer operations. Diagnosis, disease extent, previous surgery, health and team experience guide selection. Robotic surgery is not automatically better than laparoscopy; open surgery is preferable in some cases.

Potential benefits and limitations

Compared with open surgery, minimally invasive surgery may reduce pain, hospital stay and recovery time. Benefits vary and are not guaranteed. Conversion to open surgery may be needed for safety or to complete treatment.

Preparation, recovery and risks

Follow individual instructions about fasting, medication and an escort. Fatigue, incision pain or gas-related shoulder pain may follow surgery. Activity resumes according to the operation and recovery. Risks include bleeding, infection, blood clots and injury to nearby organs.

When should you seek help after surgery?

Seek prompt medical advice for fever, worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, heavy bleeding or red, discharging wounds. New breathlessness or chest pain requires urgent medical assessment.

Preparing for your appointment

Please bring relevant medical summaries, a medication list, pathology reports and available imaging. You may wish to prepare a list of questions and bring a companion of your choice.
